A quarry, a prison, and the water that took both back
Rummu began as a limestone quarry worked by inmates of the neighbouring Murru prison. When the quarry closed and the pumps stopped, groundwater did what groundwater does — and buildings, machinery and quarry walls slipped below the surface of a new lake at the foot of a white spoil hill.
For freedivers, that history is the whole point. This is not a swimming beach with a view; it is a flooded industrial landscape where a single breath takes you along walls and past structures that were never meant to be underwater.
Rummu rewards exactly the qualities freediving training builds: calm, controlled movement, good buddy habits and respect for a site that changes with weather and season.
That is why every Rummu dive we guide starts on dry land — with an honest conversation about your experience and the day's conditions.
Who a guided Rummu dive is for
A guided fundive — a recreational dive for people who already have the skills, rather than a lesson — at Rummu is not a beginner course. It is for people who already freedive and want to experience an unusual site with local guidance. Before confirming a dive, we ask about:
- your freediving level — a certification, or experience we can verify with you;
- when you last dived, and how regularly you are in the water;
- the depth you are genuinely comfortable at — not your personal best;
- the equipment you own, especially cold-water exposure protection;
- your group size and preferred dates.
New to freediving? Take the Start Here route instead — a first course is a far better first meeting with cold water than a fundive.
Safety and the local guide come before the view
Every dive runs on a buddy system with a guide who dives Rummu across the seasons. Briefings cover the site, the plan, signals and limits before anyone enters the water. Depth comes after calm, technique and a buddy — in that order.
The site is conditional by nature: wind, water temperature, visibility, ice and access can all change between booking and dive day. The final go/no-go decision always belongs to the local guide. A postponed dive is a normal outcome here, not a failure of planning.
Getting there and what to expect on land
Rummu lies in western Harju county, roughly an hour's drive from Tallinn. Most visitors rent a car or arrange transport when planning their trip — tell us in the suitability check if you need help thinking that through.
Facilities at the site are basic, and access arrangements can change; we confirm the current meeting point and practical details with every group before dive day.

Can beginners dive Rummu?
A guided Rummu fundive is not a beginner course. If freediving is new to you, start with a beginner course first — the Start Here page shows the way. Rummu will still be here when you are ready.
Is the dive guaranteed to happen on my chosen date?
No open-water dive here is ever guaranteed. Weather, water temperature, visibility, ice and site access all change, and the local guide makes the final go/no-go decision. We always discuss realistic dates and backup options with you.
What will I actually see underwater?
Quarry walls, flooded structures and equipment left behind when the pumps stopped — in northern water whose character shifts with the season. What is safely reachable on a given day depends on conditions and on your experience.
Do I need my own equipment?
Bring your own if you have it — cold-water exposure protection matters here. Tell us what you are missing in the suitability check and we will discuss options before your trip.
